For my science project, I need 200 mL of 0.1 M Hydrochloric acid.
How do I dilute 36% Hydrochloric acid to 0.1M?

Re: Diluting Hydrochloric Acid
Hi Kellly,
Handling concentrated hydrochloric acid is dangerous. You’d need personal protective equipment and supervision by someone who knows how to work with concentrated strong acids.
My suggestion is to purchase the 0.1 M hydrochloric acid that you need for your project. It is available here:
http://www.carolina.com/specialty-chemi ... estion=hcl
You’ll need to ask your teacher to order this for you through your school.
I hope this helps and good luck with your project. Please ask again if you have more questions.

Hi, I agree with A. Norman that you need to exercise caution when handling strong acids. They can cause severe burns, among other things.
A 36% HCl solution is about 11.67 M HCl. Therefore, you can mix 1.72 mL of 36% HCl with 198.28 mL of water to make 0.1 M HCl.
