Hi there! I am in a big confusion as to what to select for my final year project.
I would prefer something that is radical as well as something good for the environment or mankind.
I have been thinking of few project ideas.
(I) biofuel/biodiesel/biomass fuel production and comparison from different non-edible/waste sources
(ii) pluripotent stem cell research by using skin cells or blood cells
(iii) comparison of cloning success for different types of plants
Would you give your suggestions regarding these topics or other topics, please ?
These all sound like wonderful project ideas and that is awesome you are thinking about doing something to benefit the environment or mankind. I don't have any specific suggestions into these projects you have listed however, I have a few questions for you to think about which might help you narrow down your ideas.
1- Have you searched these topics on Sciencebuddies to see if there are any projects that are described here which really interest you in researching more?
2- What kind of help/support do you have - meaning teachers, parents, access to a lab or other things in your school, etc.?
3- What is your budget?
4- How long do you have to do your project - thinking about research time, execution of experiments, writing up your findings, etc.?
5- Is there one topic you listed below that REALLY interests you more than the others?
I would highly suggest starting with #1 and see what kinds of experiments and projects that you find interesting.
Good luck and let me know how else we can help.
Nikki
hey!
thanks for the speedy reply.
1- yes, i have searched science buddies(a lot, a real lot and have done so for past several years) and also, searched the preferential choices provided and extra links given and found quite a few of them interesting.
2- support of professors, parents and a well equipped lab is there, but we do not have permission for experiments with animal or human cells
3- as for budget, haven't thought of spending much
4- around a year's time is there to do the entire project
5- plants do interest me a lot. Like why certain plants can be planted with just seeds or stem, whereas others require more difficult techniques. How to develop variants and better quality plant products ( which are fertile) without genetically modifying them? What enzymes can be extracted from plants parts that are thrown off?
Well... Now that's too many questions again. Again confused and still searching for ideas.
< btw, i'm a biotechnology student who hates working with microbes!!!>
I would recommend again looking through the ScienceBuddies site to find a project of interest. If you have found several that look enticing to you, select one that piques your interest the most. You can even modify it in a way to answer additional questions that you want to investigate.
