Kidney filtration in the Bowmans capsule

Post by deleted-354551 »

I really need help I'm doing my science fair project on how the kidneys filter out wastes and things like that and I made a filtration apparatus using a funnel and filter paper and pouring a mixture iodine, yellow food coloring water and cornstarch through it. But I'm not sure what it is I'm testing to make the results for my report. Am I even doing it right? Aren't I supposed to be testing a certain thing over and over? Also I know the definition of what a control and independent and dependent variable is but I'm not sure what they would be for my lab please help its due tomorrow.. :(

Hi,

Sorry we didn't get back to you sooner. Try posting a question a few days before you need an answer to allow experts time to see and respond to it.

These types of projects often confuse students because they are demonstrations of a principle--like kidney action. A demonstration uses a model system to illustrate what happens in the real system; but there is no hypothesis, variables, controls or experiments. You can't do experiments on a kidney using this model. It is fine for teaching principles but not for learning how to use the scientific method.

Next time be sure to check with your teacher whether it is required that you do an actual science project. You can use Scibuddies to help you pick a certain area of science that interests you and then look through the various projects to find the one you want to do. With this kind of a project you decide on a hypothesis, learn about the system used to test it, set up the variables and controls and repeat the experiments several times to get accurate results.

Please be sure to ask questions whenever you don't understand or are not sure about something. We're here to help you learn how to do science and the more you communicate with us the more we can help!
