Toxicity testing may be done on cultured cells or on animals. The methods vary a lot depending on the type of toxin--plant, animal or inorganic. The purpose of toxicity testing is to determine the safety of a drug, the limits for an environmental pollutant like mercury or whether or not to use of some manufacturing chemical like formaldehyde.

There is tons of information online about toxicity testing. See what you can find and when you have specific questions, post again.
