Nervous system

Post by deleted-422319 »

Dear Expert,

I was wondering if someone could read these questions and answer them for my school science fair.

1. How do neurons transmit information to other neurons?

2. Where is the spinal cord located?

3. Which skills are controlled by the left cerebral hemisphere and which skills are controlled by the right cerebral hemisphere?

Thank you for your time.

Hi Willuv,

I've included some brief answers to each of your questions, as well as links if you'd like more information.

1. Neurons transmit information through electric, then chemical signals. The process of transmitting information is called an action potential. An action potential is when an electric signal moves through one neuron. Then, at the end of the neuron, chemicals called neurotransmitters are released. These chemicals move into the small gap between two neurons, called a synapse. The chemicals trigger the start of another action potential in the second neuron, and the process repeats until the signal reaches its destination. Here's a link for more info: https://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/ap.html

2. The spinal cord is a thick cord of nerves. The spinal cord located inside the spinal column, the stack of bones (called vertebrae) that makes up your spine. Here's a link to a helpful photo: https://medlineplus.gov/ency/imagepages/19588.htm

3. The left brain handles more logical, analytical, and language-processing tasks while the right brain handles creativity and spatial thinking. Here's some links for more information: http://www.livescience.com/32935-whats- ... brain.html

Hope this helped,
