Hi everyone, does anyone know if a high-potassium Ringer's solution is used to stimulate dopamine release? Thank you

Hi AlzYu,

A High potassium Ringer's solution can be used to stimulate release of the neurotransmitter Dopamine from dopaminergic neurons. It can also be used to stimulate release of many other neurotransmitters (depending on the neuron).
Using a high potassium solution changes resting membrane potential of the neuron, because it alters the concentration of potassium outside the cell relative to the inside. Normally the concentration gradient makes potassium leave the cell (which hyperpolarizes the cell and makes it less likely to release neurotransmitter), but in the presence of high potassium outside, potassium is less likely to leave the cell (and may enter in some cases) leading to a depolarization which then activates calcium channels in the nerve terminal leading to the release of neurotransmitter, in this case dopamine.
It can be used with cells or brain slices in culture, but can also be done in vivo using a canulation system.
