I think your first step needs to be to define for yourself what it means to "make life better". Perhaps you could make a list of all the chores you do on a daily basis and think about building a gaget to make one of them easier. Or you could make a list of some problems in your community and come up with a gaget to help with one of them.
I have found that the process of making lists like this will usually give me an idea or two.
Best wishes for your success on this project!

Re: Need urgent help...
Hi persian2845!
You can submit "what device or gadget that makes life better?" to answers.com.
Some notes:
1. Generally, the "Sponsored Links" are commercials. So, it's best to skip them and use only the "Web Results."
2. With answers.com, you may need to tweak your wording for best results.
3. You may want to search the output for "makes life better" to hone in on that specific term. There probably is a way to limit the search to only those having the specific term "makes life better" but it's beyond me. Can someone help?
4. You may want to do separate searches for "what device makes life better?" and "what gadget makes life better?" rather than the more general "device or gadget."
Please let me know if you if you have questions.

I think the *best* project ideas are the ones you come up with yourself. If you already have a good idea, you should follow it.
In my opinion, one of the ways a person finds happiness and a sense of purpose and fulfillment in their life is to discover the things they are passionate about and then launch a plan to work in those areas. There is an old saying that goes, "Find a job you love to do and you will never work a day in your life!" That means that if you identify the kind of work that you love, it won't seem like work. And a school project is a great opportunity for you to check out something that might lead to a career! (And, conversely, if you work on it and hate it, then you know this is not the direction you want to follow! That is also a benefit.)
Something as simple as a school project could change the direction of your life!
Best wishes for success on your project!

To Briiguy,
Unfortunately, my first and only idea failed. It involved plumbing and it saved water. It would have worked very well in a hotel but when i finished designing it i said to myself how am i going to present this to the judges....So now im back to step 1.I tried what you said but I either got no ideas or i got useless ones.Could you please help me?Just give me a good idea and ill start designing it.Im running out of time here.

As I see it, you have two choices for getting additional assistance from me:
1) You can provide more details about the idea that you have abandoned. Perhaps there is a way to salvage it.
2) You can provide me with a short list of minor problems you see in your every day life. Simple things like making breakfast, brushing your teeth, or anything. Water conservation, as your plumbing experiment description suggests, is also a good sort of topic. Think about things like that.
Once you have done this work, we can discuss the possibilities.

First thanks for caring.
Okay, my plan was to save water by...when we wash our hands in the sink, this water goes down the pipe into a tank where the water gets filtered. The dirt goes down to the sewage and the filtered water goes through a pipe with a pump and valve(makes the water go in 1 direction) inside it.Then the water goes inside the toilet tank used for flushing. There will be 2 sensors in this tank. One when the tank is empty it will use the water from the main water pipe as it always does. And the other when the tank is full it will not allow water in this tank anymore....Saves water a lot...
But how am I going to build this small scale and present it to the judges?
By the way im suposed to build a device or gadget that makes life better and ill be supplied with a 120/240V power plug at the venue. Is this idea suitable for a device or gadget??(Filter and Pump can use electricity)
Thing I have problems with are taking out trash and the uncomfortable way of vacuming...that could be an idea to make vacuming the house easier...?
Always eager to hear from you,

It is interesting to me that you thought of a way to conserve water by using it twice - once in the sink and then a second time in the toilet. A friend of mine started a small company to do that very thing 10 or 15 years ago. His system was a little different in that there was no filter. He captured the water from the sink in a tank and pumped it directly to the toilet tank when flushing.
I think this is a great idea for a project, but I can see why it would be impractical - and expensive! - to do something so extensive for your project. You'd need a sink, a toilet, and all the intermediate parts, as well as a source of water and a way to dispose of it afterwards.
So I think your better choice would be to follow your instincts on one of the other items you listed - or perhaps a third item that you have tought of since your last post.
Taking out the trash is an interesting idea. There are lots of things about trash that are nasty or annoying. It smells. It takes up too much room. Some of it can be recycled, but how do you separate it? How do you get it from the house to the dumpster? How do you collect it from the different rooms in the house? Is there anything we can do with it besides throwing it away - like convert it to fuel? There are many things about trash that could be explored.
Vacuming is also interesting. It's noisy. You have to worry about plugging the thing in. You have to watch out for the cord so you don't run it over. You have to empty it when it gets full. And how do you know when it gets full? When you empty it, dust can go everywhere. And all that air that gets pushed around - isn't there some way to harness it rather than just let it blow into the room? Is there a way to get the dirt off of the floor without using so much energy? There are many things to consider here.
I think both of your ideas are rich with potential projects.
I suggest that you do some thinking about these problems and how you might be able to develop a project around one of them.

To Briiguy,
I have thought of new idea. Now I need your help in making.
You know how sometimes how electric things can get their bodies charged and if a person touches it they ll get shocked.
I want to build a device that will detect when the body is charged and it will cut off the circiut.
Can you help in the building of this.

Could you please help me to understand what you are referring to? There is a phenomenon called "static electricity" that can build up on objects and cause tiny shocks. This is what happens when you drag your feet across a carpet and then touch a door knob, for example. This is also the process that creates lightning. But that isn't what I think you are talking about. Are you talking about some kind of safety mechanism that prevents electrical devices from shocking the people that use them? Or some combination of the two?
There is a condition called a "ground fault" where an electrical device can expose users to shock especially near water. There are curcuits called "ground fault interrupters" or "GFI" that cut off power when that condition occurs. MY house has GFI outlets in the bathroom, for example, so that we don't get into trouble if someone drops the hair dryer into the bathtub.
You can research either topic by searching Google, and answers.com, or other search sites.

I was exactly talking about ground fault but i had never knew it was invented.
Is there any other way to lok at this topic and develop somethhing else?
Till now 2 of my ideas went up Flames.
I really, really need your help now.
Do not despair! I can tell you are a creative person with many ideas of your own. You simply need to learn to trust your own instincts.
In one of your previous posts, you mentioned taking out the trash and vacuuming as problem areas. I think it's time for you to go back and read our messages on those subjects to see what kind of creative ideas you come up with. Also, it would be useful if you could think about other areas of life that you think are painful.
The best inventions come from people who have experienced the problem and are passionate about solving it. It's up to you to become that person. I will be happy to discuss your ideas, but you need to come up with them.
Note that your idea does not have to be the first solution to a problem. Yours could simply be an improvement on an existing design. If you can come up with a way to do something faster or cheaper or with less pollution, I think that qualifies as making life better, don't you?
There is also the "Topic Selection Wizard" and "Science Project Ideas" linked from the Science Buddies home page:

Whatever you do, don't give up. I have faith in you.

To Briiguy,
I thought a lot about the thrash and vacuming topics but honestly they didnt look very bright to me.
As you said,I looked around on this site and found something.
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/mentorin ... l?from=TSW
Maybe you could help me make this more interesting by developing it in another way so I could intrest the judges.
Does this does fit into the description of a gadget or device? It makes life better by saving electricity.....Could we call this an invention..If so I really like this idea but I have seen something similar in cars and bikes with dynamos.
Any comments?

Ideas to consider to enhance it for your purposes:
1) Think about where to get the moving air. Is there some activity or natural phenomenon that you could reliably get air from? How about the exhaust from the vaccum cleaner?
2) Think about ways to use the electiricty that gets generated. An LED is a neat thing, but what if it charged a battery or did something else that could be used later?
For #2, it might be good enough to build the LED and then do a write up about the other uses. You might not get anough air in your test to actually produce the current to charge a battery, for example. Or, perhaps, you could build a simple battery charge circuit that also lit an LED?
This sounds great!

DO you think that we can call this an invention and a device?
Do you think this will be accepted by the judges.

Wow! That looks like a great contest to be a part of! How exciting!
I wish I could comment on what the judges will think. I just don't know what they will be looking for. I am not familiar with the contest, and I can't tell what kind of projects people will be submitting based on what I read on their web site.
I think your idea should be considered both a device and an invention. Is there anyone at your school who has participated in this event before? Do you have examples of what other people have done as projects? I poked around at the web site and couldn't find information like this.
Is there someone at your school or someone you know who is a scinentist/engineer who can help you understand the requirements better? Have you tried contacting the BrainStorm folks directly via e-mail?
I have found that when I am confused about something, it helps to ask as many people as possible. Even if you think someone won't know, you might be surprized when you ask them!

To Briiguy,
Im still waiting for a response from them.
Anyways, when I told my freinds and family about the fan they said it wasnt that interesting since it would create enough electricity.
Can you help me with making it more interesting and more powerful or should we refer to the guys who posted that idea.(There names were at the bottom of the page, maybe they could give us help)
I really dont have anyone willing to help me around except on the web...
