Plant Growth with the use of drugs

Post by deleted-375499 »

Okay, so for my science fair project I wanted to measure the height of a plant after using over the counter drugs, because those are easiest to obtain, but I need help on what variety of medicine would be the best to use. I want to actually see good results so about maybe five or more different medicines. Also can anyone tell me if this is worthy of a tenth grade science fair project? I really want to make this work so someone please respond as soon as possible! Also if anyone knows how to make this project more advanced please tell me because it frightens me that these posts have so many views but so little replys.

Hello!

I think your project definitely has the potential of being in a science fair! It's an interesting concept, but I think you'll need to clarify a couple things before you go about designing your experiment:

1. Time - How much time do you have to conduct this experiment? Measuring plant growth and determining what the overall effects the over-the-counter medication has on plant growth will require quite a bit of time. So, it's important to gauge how much time you have to do the project. If you don't have enough time to do this project or think you don't have enough time to do this project, you may need to consider an alternative route in terms of measuring the effects of over-the-counter medication.

2. Research Question/Hypothesis - What is it about the over-the-counter drugs are you trying to test in relation to plant growth? Toxicity? Benefits of over-the-counter drugs? What implications of the potential beneficial/detrimental effects say about the consumption of these drugs by humans? That sort of thing... I think if you determine what exactly your research question is, then you can decide which over-the-counter drugs you can acquire to test your hypothesis. Also, doing a little more research on your question can help you determine how much of each drug should you use on your plants. Using too much can be very toxic to your plants.

There is a lot of promise in your project, the idea is to refine your idea so that you're testing something relatively specific. The broader your question, the harder it is to determine what you're trying to test out. So, you'll need to ask yourself a few questions, like what is it about medication that makes you curious? What do you know about medication? What don't you know about medication? How can you test out the effects of medication? ...it's just a series of questions you'll need to ask yourself to help you with your overall design.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any more questions!
