Google to the rescue

Try googling these:

"self-propelled car" design create

"self-propelled car" "science fair"

"self-propelled car" ("electric motor" OR bicarbonate) project

"self-propelled car" science project

legs natural motion robot

I can't give you specific projects, since you need to figure that out yourself. We can help you if you get stuck, or need something explained, etc. Use the above keywords as a starting point, and tweak them with a few of your own, especially once you've found some specific possibilities that interest you.

A meter is a short enough distance that you should try to get creative and unusual. At least at first, consider wacky possibilities that might distinguish you from the pack. Motion can be achieved by thrust, by capturing an outside force (like a sailboat), or by something that makes one of the axles turn. The axle doesn't need to turn smoothly, it's OK for it to turn in fits and starts if your source of motion requires it. Maybe you can do something with legs instead of wheels, or things that look like a combination of legs and wheels.

Have a brainstorming session with your friends, both before and after searching for things on the net.
