Sir,what is the advantage of studying the propagation of primary waves (by using sound waves)through different soils.
Won't the earth quake will not happen if the amplitude of primary wave is reduced?
If primary wave is not reached at the upper layer of soil,surface will happen or not?

The Science Buddies "ask an expert" forum is for helping students in grades K-12 with their science projects. Are you doing a science project that involves seismology? If so, it would help the experts here help you if you could describe your project in more detail, including your hypothesis and the experiments you plan to conduct for testing your hypothesis.

My project is based on the project idea "The ground breaking revelation.Testing longitudinal wave through different soil types" given in the list of projects under the category of seismology in science buddies website.So please help me by noting that project.

Hi Jibin,

Thanks for providing that background information. The primary wave is the first wave that you feel in an earthquake, if the amplitude is reduced you would simply feel a smaller earthquake instead of not feeling one at all. It looks like P-waves are studied in this experiment because they are longitudinal waves which are easy to simulate using a loudspeaker to create vibrations similar to an earthquake.
