Folding Water

I can't find this term any where on Google.

What happens in a large body of still water when the top layer becomes much colder than the water below it? It folds! I learned this as a scuba diver and have personally witnessed this phenomena several times.

This usually happens on a cold fall night when the lake or pond has not experienced cold air temps. yet. I have seen two things happen. The water either creates river like currents (convection) or it looks like it is boiling as it tries to stabilize Cold water is more dense than warm so it wants to sink). It is an upside down thermocline - a very cool phenomenon!

Is there another name for this phenomenon? Is it just not documented?

Thank you Norman. I did sign up as an adult and could not find any grade higher than 12 to present a question to. I would guess that this is a great question for anyone who's interested in science and Hydro Dynamics. Having said that if you can direct me to a better place to receive an answer this question that would be absolutely fantastic!
