Effect of Moisturizers on Jelly

Post by deleted-808046 »

Hey!

First of all, thanks for reading this, it means alot!

I would like to know what certain reaction is happening on this experiment. (jelly mass decreases over time)

As for the media of the experiment, is jello considered as a normal powdered jelly made with water? if so, is it possible to use other brands such as nutrijell? do they have the same effect?

Thanks! and please reply ASAP! :D

Hello and welcome to Science Buddies,

It sounds like you are looking at the project:

https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... skin-moist

If so, then you can answer your first question yourself -- you should read each section, and then read the procedure section again, paying attention to the observations you will be making on the jello in the petri dishes. Notice that the procedure asks you to have several petri dishes with jell but with no moisturizer. Those dishes will be your control, and will allow you to see what happens to the jell over time, in the absence of moisturizer.

As for whether you can substitute another brand of jello such as nutrijell - that should work since you will be using the nutrijell for evaluating each individual moisturizer. You may need to modify how long you leave the petri dishes with the jell in the frig, just be sure the jell is firm before you add the moisturizer.

One caution: using nutrijell should allow you to evaluate the effects of the different moisturizers on nutrijell. If you also want to see if you would see the same effects on jello, you would need to repeat the project using jello!

Please post again if you have more questions!

sorry for the long reply

if it is possible, i would like to know how we would know which moisturizer is the most effective one, it is the one with the least/most jello mass...
i also wanted to know what type of reaction happened throughout the whole experiment which caused the jelly to loose weight... thanks and have a great day

Hello astrugglingstudent,

I suggest that you read the project background and procedures carefully so that you can find the answers to your questions. Reading and understanding the project directions is part of the benefits of doing a science project.

Your first question:
how we would know which moisturizer is the most effective one

Look at the procedure directions in the section Testing the Skin Moisturizers, this is the information that you recorded in your lab notebook. By analyzing those observations, you should be able to conclude which moisturizer was most effective. If you are still unsure, look at my suggestions for answering your second question.

Your second question:
what type of reaction happened throughout the whole experiment which caused the jelly to loose weight
Read the Background section carefully and you will be able to describe what was happening in your experiments. In particular, look at the background text that describes the different effects of the three main groups of moisturizer ingredients. This also suggests that you might see differences between the moisturizers that you tested. Learning to relate the background information to the results that you observed is one of the benefits of doing a science project.

Let us know what you observed in your experiments and how you interpret those results!

Thanks for replying, However....

what i meant by reactions is that of chemical reactions. I do know that certain moisturizers would have a certain impact through reading the background tab, however i would like to see the chemical reaction resulted by the chemicals chosen (Glycerin, mineral oil, triethanolamine, petroleum jelly) towards the media (agar)

Thankyou for reading this message and please reply as soon as possible!:D

Hello astrugglingstudent,

Thank you for clarifying your question!

I did a quick google search for the phrase "how do humectants work" and found this link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humectant

Look for the section labeled "Cosmetics" and you will see a description of the chemical reaction between the humectant and skin. That section also refers to other online references for various specific humectants. I suggest that you check out those references each of the specific ingredients which you tested in your project.

Let us know if this helps!
