new project idea?? mabye??

Post by chai26 »

I have a different project idea that I don't think will need a mentor: The Effect of Temperature on Viscosity. Does that sound like a high school level project? My teacher just told me that I need to redo everything! (inculding the research plan). I need to find a fast, easy project that I can do, but will still get me an A. I like to work with pH and physics. If you have any project ideas, I would be SO HAPPY!!! Thanks for your time! :D

PS: Caroline, thanks for your help! :)

Chai26,

If the topic interests you, I say go for it. The things you probably need to consider are: what material(s) will you be measuring the viscosity of, how will you measure viscosity, and how will you adjust temperature?

If you're just looking for project ideas, I suggest you take a look at the science fair topic selector, which can be accessed from the main page (the link's above). I encourage you to go through the wizard and see what interests you!

project topic

hey chai26

im sorry about that. but what i think is that you should choose a project that you will truely enjoy and have the heart at doing. i understand the situation you were in. when i conducted my science fair, my teacher kept telling me that it was not going to work. instead i kept going forward because i knew that i was capable 100% of acquiring the necessary materials. in the end NO ONE expected me to succeed but i was able to go VERY far with my project.
....All i am trying to say is choose a project that you know you will succeed in yet at the same time enjoy learning what you are doing and you will also go far.
I hope this helps and good luck with your project

Hi Chaya,

What makes a high school level project is how you design the experiment not necessarily what the question is. What counts is being thoughtful and innovative about the materials, equipment, controls and variables when you set up the experiment and how you interpret the results and evaluate how well your system performed and if it was really capable of answering the question or if it had limitations. It can also be good to think about the practical or real world implications about what you are testing.

I would agree with the other experts that choosing something you enjoy will help too. It will speed up doing the background research if its a subject you have already read about or have books on.

Talk some more about your idea and how you are thinking of doing the experiment - especially the considerations that Melissa suggested. Bouncing ideas around on the board can help the project evolve. A few funny real-world examples of how temperature effects viscosity come to my mind - chewing gum on the sidewalk on a hot day is one, those new types of air freshener candles that become hot oil are another.

Best of luck,
Caroline

Chaya,

Take what you know about temperature and viscosity, add what you like "pH and physics" (and remember raw eggs float), then come up with a hypothesis that is relevant to something that interests you:
Rollerbladding, skateboarding, cooking, airplanes, robots whatever and apply it. You'll be amazed at what you can come up with that no one has ever thought of :)

Good luck.
