DNA project: What Reacts?

Post by Dillon Wiebe »

I am having trouble with research on a certain topic. I visisted this site and found a project on Extracting Onion DNA but i wanted to expand on to a topic of "What Does DNa react to and what to stay away from". I really need an experts opinion of what i should test after extracting the DNA. :(

Dillon Wiebe's DNA experiment question

Post by Jsnell »

Hi Dillon,

I'd first recommend that you do a bit of background research on what DNA is made up of, and how it reacts/acts in real life. This will give you an initial understanding of DNA, and might in fact assist you in narrowing down exactly what you want to be testing or looking for in the onion DNA. Some good sites to go to would be answers.com, or even google.com. I just looked up "what does DNA react to" on google, and many sites came up. Another thought is that when extracting DNA, you might want to see if any mutations occured in the DNA strand, and if so, how they affected the onion itself. You also may want to ask your science teacher for further insight on this issue. Good Luck!

Dillon,

Are you trying to come up with modifications to the DNA extraction process?
If so this website will help:
http://www.accessexcellence.org/AE/AEC/ ... html#chart

The site also explains what is happening throughout the extraction process.

But what do you plan to do with the onion DNA once you extract it?
Compare the color, acidity (pH), size, amount, elasticity with other plant DNA or animal DNA? Then ask/predict why they are similar or different? Or are you going to try to see if it makes a good shampoo? Floor cleaner? or something like that?

I'm interested in what you decide and find out.

Reactivity & DNA

Post by paulogoeb »

First off, I'd like to point out that some study on the structure of DNA (which I'm sure you've done) would be beneficial when it comes to strudying its reactivity. However, posing the question of what DNA reacts to and what it stays away from is a very difficult experiment to conduct in my opinion. I would think about using the following sites for help:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNA
http://www.dnaftb.org/dnaftb/
http://www.dnai.org/

Good luck on your project, but I think I could help you more if you got clarification from your teacher. This would really help me help you, but right now this project seems like it is very difficult.

Color
DNA is a creamy white color.

Shape
DNA strands are very long and thin.

Solubility
DNA is soluble in water. DNA is insoluble in ethanol.

pH
DNA is acidic.
I found this info. on this website: http://www.carolina.com/biotech/onion2.asp

-You may want to look at how this experiment is conducted for the method of onion DNA extraction. DNA reacts to different liquids (such as which liquids it is soluble in and which it is insoluble in) and to pH indicators (as it is acidic)
