Big Question

Post by Dixon »

My project is Recording on a Wire. I understand the goal of learning about magnetic heads by building & testing a wire recorder. But I don't know what the hypothesis is. What is my question. Maybe I am trying to make it harder than it is! Please help!

Hi Dixon,

Well what made you want to do a project on "recording on a wire" in the first place ? There must have been a reason why you choose that particular subject ?

If you just happen to know about it and thought it was a simple experiment to run then perhaps the following may trigger you to ask some question. I am taking this from the perspective of trying to make your end result (wire recorder) more robust as if in the end you were to market it:
- Are there any things that can change in the process of recording by using a wire (eg. type of wire with different properties, etc).
- What things can corrupt/degrade the recorded data on the wire ?
- What are the effects of temperature on both a recorded data on a wire or on the process of recording itself ?
- Are there certain advances that you can make to the existing wire recorder that you are familiar with ? To make the end result better ? To protect data from corruption in point #2 above ?
- What stopped wire recording from being adapted to today's technology ?

You get the idea then. Think about for a while. I am pretty sure something would come up that would interest you and would become a good hypothesis. Then have fun doing an experiment on it !

Good luck !

Hi Dixon!

As background, you may want to consult the wikipedia entry for wire recording at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_recording

Other sites that you might want to look at are:

http://depts.washington.edu/ethmusic/wire1.html
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/mentoring/project_ideas

The above sites may help you in determining a hypothesis, which I know was your question.

I suggest you read through the science buddies page. Two items looked significant during a quick glance: the degree of difficulty and the cost.

The above three sites were generated by submitting "Recording on a Wire" to answers.com.

Notes:

1. The exact wording of your input to answers.com, or any other search engine, may have a big impact on your result. So, some experimentation may be needed.
2. Beware of sites that are just trying to sell you something. In answers.com, these are supposed to be segregated under "Sponsored Links." But, they occasionally leak into "Web Results."
Cheers!
