This experiment offers an in depth video that goes through each step of the experiment. I would recommend following along with the video step by step and pausing the video as you do it.
If you still do not find this helpful, it seems you are getting confused with the last step of the project where you analyze the DNA. Make sure you give the liquids time to separate. You are looking for a gooey substance at the surface of your mixture.

There are several DNA projects at Science Buddies that are designed as independent projects. The "strawberry DNA" one is a beginner level, however, and may not be difficult enough for your grade level:
