My son would like to run this experiment for his science fair project. We are unable to find the chemical Cobalt Nitrate Hexahydrate. The link to Amazon says it no longer has product. Can you offer a substitute or other place to purchase?

Hello,
I found the exact bottle of Cobalt Nitrate Hexahydrate used in the experiment through United Nuclear. It is available for UPS shipping. Here is the link: https://unitednuclear.com/restricted-to ... p-122.html
On Amazon, there is another brand selling Cobalt Nitrate Hexahydrate, but the percentages of chemicals may be different and could have different results. Here is the link: https://www.amazon.com/Cobalt-Nitrate-H ... B00SUN3MIG
Have fun running the experiment!

I am not sure if that is the same specification.

The CAS numbers are not the same on the Amazon listing and the safety sheet at the alternate site.

I also don't know how these might differ for the project.

Hi - I had a scientist on our team take a look, and it seems that the Amazon listing has the wrong CAS listed (whether that is a new problem or not, I am not sure).

Here's the info on the correct reagent for this project (Cas # 10026-22-9): https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compou ... exahydrate

The link CarissaP provided to the chemical at United Nuclear is what is used in the project, just directly from the manufacturer.

As for the other link provided, the Chemsaver reagent, our scientist notes that, in terms of the overall experiment, any impurities from the insolubles could affect the transparency or clarity of the solution, making it harder to see the electrodes. However, they are pretty minimal, as the overall percent purity is 99.9%. The United Nuclear listing would be a better choice, but this would potentially be an acceptable alternative.

I apologize for any confusion with the link from the Materials in the project.
