Macroinvertebrates as indicators of pollution project

Post by wgeorge »

Hello, we are wondering if Table 1 is just an example of a longer list that we are to create to document more invertebrates and also, how are we to draw conclusions about the health of the waterway or the susceptibility of macroinvertebrates to
pollution? Is it a matter of researching each invertebrate to learn about their role in the waterway? Is there a reference(s) that one can utilize on your site to help with this research? Thank you.

Hi. It is great to see that your student is interested in this environmental science project!

Our staff scientist (the author of this project) looked at your questions and has some clarifications that should help.
These are great questions, and all of this information can be found on our page.

Yes, Table 1 is just to help you identify the unique macroinvertebrates in your waterway. More rows can be added for each macroinvertebrate. Using the table, students can count the number of each type of macroinvertebrate and then categorize their relative abundance compared to other macroinvertebrates in their area.

The bibliography includes a great reference guide to help students identify macroinvertebrates and classify their susceptibility to pollution (color-coded). You can find it at the bottom of the page that is linked.

Generally, the higher the number of macroinvertebrates that are susceptible to pollution over time, the better the overall health of the creek. Multiple measurements at different times will allow you to best assess this. This is a unique way to assess overall creek health by examining its impact on biodiversity.
Please let us know if you have additional questions.

We would love to hear how your student's project and assessment of a local creek goes!
