What does the ridges on a Mento have to do with the reaction when you put it in a coke or carbonated drink of some kind?

Hi!

The ridges of a Mentos really helps create bubbles, providing more space for them to grow. When you put it in soda, the gas bubbles latch onto the bumpy surface, quickly leaving the liquid. This creates a large, bubbly mess. So the reaction isn't as strong when Mentos have a smooth surface.
