Science Fair Project Question (Reducing Landfill Emissions)

Post by ThePiGuy »

Hi, I'm doing a project where I want to find the best method to reduce landfill gas emissions. I will do this by running an experiment with a simulated landfill in a bottle. However, I need help coming up with variables/methods for my experiments. I want 5 realistic and easily attainable methods, and so far I have 3 (control with normal landfill conditions, removal of organic matter, and a biocover made with soil and plants). Can you help me come up with more?

If you want to know more details about my project:

I will be running the experiment in a sealed system for 7 days.
I will precisely measure the gas output by using a process called "gas collection by water displacement," where the gases produced from the landfill force a liquid out.

Thank you.

Hi! Thank you so much for your question. Your project sounds really interesting! Besides the methods you already have, you could also try changing things like the amount of moisture, the amount of air flow, or what materials are mixed into the landfill to see how they affect gas production. You might also experiment with different cover types or temperature conditions. These are all simple ways to explore how different factors can change the amount of gas released.
