what is a open circuit and a closed circuit
How do open and closed circuits work? I am doing vegetables and fruits and how they power a battery. I am wondering what those mean so I understand and can present for the science Fair. That is happening in a month or 2. Please replie to help me with science Fair

Hi there,
The project posted above will show you how a vegetable or fruit can be turned into a sort of "battery". The science behind this is mainly due to how the electrolytes, specifically in this case the potassium in potatoes, is driving the chemical reaction to turn the zinc electrode, or piece of metal, into a Zinc ion and electrons. The electrons then can run to the copper electrode because of its desire to turn Hydrogen Ions, which come from the potato into the more stable Hydrogen gas, or H2. All this is to say, potatoes have very useful acids that provide these Hydrogen ions which allows for the electrons to run across from the negative zinc to the positive copper through the LED, generating light.
