Question on copper corrosion testing

Post by ava6thgrader »

Hello! I am working on my science fair project and need help choosing a copper test and the right solutions.

My research question is: How does pH affect the amount of copper released from copper samples over time?

I plan to compare solutions at pH 3, 4, and 5 and measure dissolved copper over several days. I will use a digital pH meter to measure the pH.

1.Would the Seachem MultiTest Copper kit accurately measure dissolved copper in these solutions, or is there a better, affordable method for a middle-school science fair?

2.What affordable solution system would let me compare pH 3, 4, and 5 while minimizing other chemical variables? I initially considered white vinegar and distilled water, but I understand that changing vinegar dilution also changes the acetic acid concentration.

3.Is measuring dissolved copper over time a scientifically valid way to investigate copper corrosion, and are there any important controls I should include?

I have not purchased the supplies yet, so I would appreciate recommendations before ordering anything.

Thank you for your help! :D

The middle school project that we have on copper and corrosion does use vinegar and water. A testing kit is available for the project directions, if you are interested in seeing how it compares to the project you've outlined.
