Jospeh, this is out of my field. Three errant thoughts come to mind:

1) do mirages vary depending on environmental quality? That is, if the water or air is polluted, will the mirage be less or more able to be seen?
2) does a person's vision acuity make a difference in whether they can see a mirage or not? what about someone who is color blind?
3) People do see floaters and other objects in their vision. I believe these are unrelated to how a mirage is seen. But it is interesting how we see things that aren't there.

These above thoughts have no scientific basis, just ideas that came to my mind based on your question.

Hopefully, someone with more background in this area will be able to answer you soon.

Thanks for your thoughts on my science project.

These are great thoughts and I think I'll go with the environmental impact on mirages.

This ought to work as a health topic for my project . There are many people living in the desert today and I'm sure that air/water pollution exists there as well as lack of water due to overuse and wasteful practices today.
