Buying earthworms

Post by donnahardy2 »

Hi,

If you want your earthworms to grow and reproduce, I would not recommend buying worms from a bait shop. My niece did an earthworm project a few years ago, and I bought her bait shop worms twice before we figured out that they weren't doing anything. We finally bought fresh worms from a company that sold them for composting. The healthy worms ate, grew, and reproduced and so my niece obtained quantitative results. So, I would recommend buying really healthy worms from a local source. The only thing I think she would have changed about the project was the method of measuring earthworm growth; she had to count hundreds of earthworms at the end of the project, and it probably would have saved a lot of time if she had weighed them instead.

If you know of someone who raises rabbits, you could ask if you could dig in the soil under the rabbit cages. This would be a really good source of healthy earthworms.
