Science fair project
My partner and I are planning on conducting an experiment about Alzheimers, and how it can be detected. Besides doing the possible tests that are available now, can it be detected by a protein or any other substances in the body that can say that you have Alzheimers?

Re: Science fair project
Hi,
This is a great topic, however, it may challenging to identify an experiment that you could do for a science fair project.
The beta amyloid peptides that are considered to be biomarkers for this disease are challenging measure because they aggregate and stick to laboratory glassware. Here is a paper that describes an analytical method for these peptides, however, doing a project like this would require access to a laboratory with the specialized equipment:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17117458
There are lots of possible experiments that you can do, so please do as much background reading as you can to get an idea for an experiment and consider the following project ideas:
Here are examples of projects involving chemistry that other students have done on this topic:

This project involved working with Alzheimer's patients, however, I'm not sure that you would be able to get approval for a project like this.

Here are a couple of project ideas on memory from the Science Buddies website that you might be able to adapt to your topic:

Please post again if you have any questions.
