Microbial Fuel Cells
I'm interested in making a microbial fuel cell for my science fair project and i live in Atlanta, GA. Is there any hardware store I can go to get the carbon cloth, or should i just purchase it online? Also, how long do you think it would take me to complete the experiment?

Re: Microbial Fuel Cells
Hi shiv_pal,
Welcome to Science Buddies! Learning to make a microbial fuel cell is an interesting and rewarding project. Have you seen the Science Buddies project information about making a microbial fuel cell? https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p026.shtml The information indicates that the project can take anywhere from several weeks to months to complete. If your entire project (including results) is due January 10th, this may not be the project for you.
Since carbon cloth is a specialty material, I would recommend ordering it online (which may add to your timeline). Science Buddies has links for where to purchase the special materials you need https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... #materials
If time is a problem for you, this other Science Buddies uses a kit to make a fuel cell in 1-2 weeks: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p002.shtml. This project involving water to create renewable energy takes about a week: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p099.shtml.
I hope this helps. If you are still looking for a project that suits both your interests and your timeline, I recommend trying the Topic Selection Wizard (https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... gister.php), which will take your interests and your time frame into consideration and will suggest possible project ideas.
Please post again (in this same thread) if you have more questions.
