Building the Tallest Tower

Post by stkeister »

My 4th grade son completed the project "Building the Tallest Tower". He built 3 towers out of LEGO's, all with the same base the only difference was the height. Then he made a shake table out of 3-ring binder covers, rubber bands and 4 bouncy balls. The table displacement went up from 1 inch to 2 inches to 4 inches. He was looking to see if the height of the tower affected its stability as he shook the table. He has all of his data in the format of the suggestion in the instructions as follows:
Tower Height \ Table Displacement (cm) \ Did it Fall? (Y/N)
11cm \ 1 inch \ No
11cm \ 2 inches \ No
11cm \ 4 inches \ No
16cm \ 1 inch \ No
16cm \ 2 inches \ No
16cm \ 4 inches \ No
25cm \ 1 inch \ No
25cm \ 2 inches \ No
25cm \ 4 inches \ Yes

For the Science Fair board he is supposed to have a graph. My question is, how would you graph the Yes/No data above?
Thanks so much!

I apUd you for working with your child on his project. It's really important we support our kids with their scientific pursuits.

I think a good way to plot this woe be an X- Y scatter plot with two different symbols. Thatis, create a chart with tower height on the X axis (horizontal) and displacement on the Y a is (vertical). Then you would of the point that did not fall with one data symbol, and the one that did fall using a different symbol. That should provide a good graphic picture of his results.

And HAVE FUN WITH SCIENCE!!
