hollow column forces
Demonstrate the strength of hollow columns to support loads using empty toilet paper rolls. How can the forces be calculated? Other studies have used filled toilet paper rolls, with for example sand.

Re: hollow column forces
david martin - Assuming you are trying to achieve the highest possible load for an empty cardboard tube, you would very carefully add weight to the column until it collapsed. The trick is 'carefully' in this experiment. Filling the cavity with sand may significantly aid in stabilizing the cardboard tube as minute deflections tend to occur as weight is added.
