Project Question: I am doing a project with salt bridges but using 4 different salts in four different bridges. My way of testing it is by checking which has the pH to see which bridge changed it at the greatest rate. The problem forms when I put my pH probes in the water, one shoots up to 14 and the other to -6 which is way off.

Salt Bridge pH wacky

Post by Johnny_Doherty »

When I try to measure the pH of my solutions, the anode shoots up to 14.397 and the the cathode down to -6.088. Obviously this is not right and I'm not sure what's wrong. Plus they stay constant, not changing at all. :(

Hello Johnny_Doherty,

I'm assuming that you are working on the project described at this link:
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p087.shtml

From your description it appears that something is wrong with your pH meter. Do you have a calibration solution that you can use to make sure your pH meter is working properly?

I hope this helps. Please ask again if you have more questions.

A. Norman
