What is a quartz reactor?

What is a quartz reactor?
I have heard of this strange piece of lab equipment, but do not know what it does. Anyone have an idea?

John - There is an abundance of web based information on quartz reactors. Not sure what level of explanation you are looking for, but a simple Google query will give you many references.
