Earthworms and soil

Post by deleted-329498 »

my mom bought soil but it looks like it has organic fertilizers in it. Can I still use it?

If we need to get new soil tomorrow, what should we do with the earth worms tonight? Should we put them in the soil we have just for tonight?
Thank you,
Michele

Hello,
When you add nitrogen-rich compost to your soil, you help worms thrive. However, adding synthetic nitrogen fertilizers may repel earthworms. Worms are very sensitive to physical and chemical changes and will flee the salty conditions that result from an application of chemical fertilizer. Are you sure the fertilizer in your soil is not synthetic? If it is synthetic, then I would lean toward purchasing new plain soil. If you decide to purchase new soil, try placing the worms in a homemade earthworm bin while you're waiting. First find and punch holes in a plastic container. Place sheets of damp newspaper or coir inside the bin along with some garden soil (this is a TEMPORARY environment. Garden soil is most likely not enough to sustain your worm population for too long). Once you're done making your temporary bin, don't forget to place it in a dark and safe environment. While your at it, try feeding your worms freshly dampened and chopped vegetable matter. Good luck!
