Engineering Project

Post by deleted-330793 »

I am doing a 2016 synopsis science project and I want to know how to make things out of plastic. I am making a fairly large contraption and I want to know what kind of plastic to use, where to get it, and how to mold it with precision.

AnuragTarmaster - I'm afraid we don't have enough information to help at this point. You suggest selecting a plastic material. That alone is a very broad question. What are the necessary physical properties needed by your 'contraption'? Once you determine that, there are several retailers and hardware stores like TAP Plastics that can provide acrylic, poly-carbonate, nylon, styrofoam, polyurethane and other materials in sheet, rod or other shapes. You mention you want to mold it with precision. Molding is usually described as heating the material until it is quite soft, or liquid, and pouring or injecting it into forming molds. That is a serious undertaking, possibly requiring machinery you will not have access to. Plastic fabrication, that is cutting, drilling, sanding and gluing are fairly easy to do. Bending with applied heat may also be within your capability. You say that your design is fairly large, so that might might create additional problems. Tell us more about your idea and we can better assist you in planning a design.
