This is the project I was doing. I saw that the shells increased in their weight.

I did a Google search for: sea shells increase in weight in highly acidic water and I came up with this link http://www.livescience.com/3363-growing ... tures.html Check it out, I think it may help answer your question as to why you saw an increase in weight.
