Burning Calories!!!!!

Post by deleted-369162 »

Before completing the experiment I have been asked to determine the DEPENDANT VARIABLES (and how they are measured), INDEPENDENT VARIABLES (and how they are measured), and 3 CONTROLLED VARIABLES (and how they will be kept constant). I am very confused as to what these are in regards to the project. It would be a great help if someone could explain.

Thank You :)

Hi politd14,

Are you doing "Burning Calories: How Much Energy is Stored in Different Types of Food?" The "Taking Measurements" section of the procedure identifies the independent and dependent variables in this project.

The independent variable is the thing that *you* change. (Hint: What do you choose in step 2 of "Taking Measurements"? The things you choose during this step represent your independent variable.)

The dependent variable is the thing that you observe changing in response to the independent variable. (Hint: What are you measuring in step 3i? This is the dependent variable.)

Controlled variables are things that stay the same in all the tests. For example, you use the same calorimeter in all of the tests, and you use the same thermometer. What other things stay the same in all the tests? (Put another way, what do you reuse in all of your tests?) These will also be controlled variables.

Post back with what you think the independent, dependent, and other controlled variables are, and I'll let you know if you are on the right track.
All the best,
Terik
