Re: What is the effect of different contents of sodium fluoride, in water, on tooth decay?

Post by sunmoonstars »

Hi, welcome to Science Buddies!

This sounds like an interesting project. Many times, when scientists want to study something, we build a model system. For this project, can you think of something made of the same (or similar) compounds as teeth? Perhaps eggshells? You could make solutions of water with different amounts of fluoride in them. How could you model for tooth decay? You could try to measure something else, like hardness of the teeth (eggshells) or presence of breakdown/holes?

Make sure to do some research before you start! What concentrations of fluoride should you use? How long will it take to breakdown eggshells without fluoride? Is there a better model to use instead of eggshells? Has anyone done this before and you can learn from their work?
