How can diamond inside diamond anvil cell(dac) sustain 100GPa if it has compressive strength of only 8.68 - 16.53 GPa. Shouldn't diamond be crushed at such pressure?

tech-art,

This forum is to help students develop and complete top-notch science fair projects, not to provide answers to general questions.

If your question is science-fair related, please provide some background on your project (e.g. what your question/goal is). If this is a general question, please try looking for the answer to your question via an internet or library search.
All the best,
Terik

Hi tech-art!

To simplify, if you post "How can diamond inside a diamond anvil cell maintain a pressure?" to answers.com you'll get back a wide range of resources. The most promising at first blush are:

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_diamond
2. http://www.eurekalert.org/features/doe/ ... 122204.php
3. http://www.llnl.gov/tid/lof/documents/pdf/236368.pdf

Notes:

1. Wording changes on the search to answers.com may yield differing results.
2. Please be wary of sites just trying to sell you something.
3. Please excuse if you've already seen these sites.
Cheers!

Dave
