Ball Launcher Challenge

A few students are constructing a launcher similar to a ballista. Can they alter the projectile to have a notch in it?
Can anything be added to the projectile or can it be shaped or altered in any way?

Hi dwsherwood --

The ball must remain a sphere (no notches, sticking a paper clip through it, etc). Otherwise it would be too difficult for us to draw the line on what modifications are allowed and determine which ones could give an unfair advantage (e.g. making it a streamlined projectile instead of a ball).
