Need help on my food preservative research project
I plan to do research on using Moringa Oleifera and Turmeric extracts combined as synergistic effect as food preservative compared with artificial chemicals such as BHT and BHA. I plan to use chicken broth or solid meat and count colonies of bacteria using agar plates. Any idea if chicken broth or solid meat is better for my project? If i buy them store bought, they would already have preservatives. how will I get chicken broth or solid meat without preservative? I also need to what is the standard amount of BHT and BHA used current for preserving chicken broth or solid meat. where do I find that information. Also, how much of the moringa/turmeric extracts should i use.

Okay so there is a lot to cover in this question that I may not be the most helpful with, but in your project I would recommend chicken broth. I would recommend this because it isn’t going to be as wasteful as having to buy an entire chicken, and it would have less of a smell then the chicken. Plus, it is easier to clean. (This is my perspective you don’t have to follow it, but that’s just my advice)

Hello,
Acknowledging the previous response to your question, I would recommend you use solid meat since it is easier to extract a sample and examine it closely under a microscope. It isn't necessary to buy a full-sized chicken. You can just use a slice of meat from a Deli and use that as your sample. Regarding how to get solid meat without preservatives, just try looking at the label on the meat packaging or look for an organic option that is preservative-free. You could also visit a local farm and see if they have any preservative-free options there. In order to find out how much BHT and BHA is contained in the meat you buy, you might consider contacting the manufacturing company and see if they have an answer to that question if not on the packaging. The amount of moringa/turmeric extract you should use should be the same as the amount of artificial preservatives in the other sample of meat, therefore keeping it constant.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

Re: Need help on my food preservative research project
Hello and welcome!
I do think solid meat would be the better option for your project as it is easier to look at under a microscope, and it has a definite shape and size, whereas a liquid such as chicken broth may be hard to keep in one place without losing part of the sample, which would make your data inaccurate.
As for getting the meat, as EricBebenov24 said, a local farm is most likely the best option to get the purest type of meat in terms of preservatives.
Additionally, most deli meats (cold cuts) do not contain preservatives, so these would most likely be the best option for your project.
Make sure you count the same species or type of bacteria from each of your samples for the most accurate results!
Hope this helps,
