Hi,

It depends on exactly what you mean by "purified" - there are a number of different ways to purify water, some that just remove particles or kill bacteria and others that remove salts, nutrients, oxygen etc.
Protists need oxygen to survive and they get absorb this by diffusion from their environment so they would not grow well in distilled deionised water as it has very little dissolved oxygen.
Are you asking because you want to grow protists?
