Is there a way to assess mitochondrial function by measuring how much CO2 is exhaled? If so, how would this be done?

Yes, my question is related to a science fair project. I am hoping to determine whether mitochondria function at differing rates at higher altitude and at varying temperature. I do realize that the human body stays at relatively the same temperature no mater what the exercise conditions- but other perimeters are altered, such as dehydration rate, etc... I have yet to completely design my experiment but was wondering if it was even possible to simply detect mitochondrial output.

What a cool topic! Luckily there is a way to assess mitochondrial function by monitoring either carbon dioxide or oxygen. I recently did a lab like this in my bio class and we utilized a tool called a respirometer and monitored the respiration rate by the amount of oxygen used. Our teacher gave us a virtual lab and recommended some videos to watch prior to class, which I’ll attach below.
