Growing rock candy crystals project

We are not sure if we conducted this project correctly, after making the sugar water solution the water is yellow and thick not clear like the picture. Does this mean the project was done wrong?

Hello!

This color might be caused by some excess gunk that was left in the saucepan because a mixture of water and sugar should stay clear.
