Hi!
The wool is meant to act as an insulator for the jar, modeling how it acts as an insulator in real life. In the experiment, the wool is mentioned in the Preparation section, in step 5:
"Take another glass jar and wrap the scarf or other wool fabric around the jar. Only make three layers of wrapping and make sure that the scarf stays attached to the jar."
The wool covering the jar serves as part of the experimental group.
