how would I go about preparing for this project? (materials and procedures) Also is this appropriate for my grade level? 8

What's your idea for the experimental design? It would be difficult for me to help you if you don't tell me what you are trying to do. Subliminal messages is a broad topic and the experimental design revolves around how you want to embed your messages and what the messages are.
