Need help with science project idea pertaining to photonics

Last year, a student at the school I currently attend made a science project about increasing channel capacity in fiber optics lines by transmitting "multiplex orbital angular momentum states". The student's success at local, district, state, and international level science fairs made me want to do a photonics science project myself. However, I'm finding it hard to brainstorm worthy ideas or even conduct meaningful background research. Any help to this end would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

you might want to search terms such as "photonics research" to google.com. Many of the projects that come back are college level, so you'll need to adjust. (I'm not sure exactly how. Any thoughts?)
