Moorthy,

It is rather difficult to help you when we are not sure what exactly you need. In order to help you to the best of our ability, we need to have as much information about your project as possible. What are you testing? What will the model be used for? When is the project due? What ideas do you already have? Does the model need to be to scale? Does a realistic seismic event have to be the source of the tsunami? What size of waves must be generated? How large of an apparatus do you need? Exactly what is your budget ($10, $100, $1000, $1000000)?

The more specific information you can provide us with, the better we can help you.

Furthermore, we will not do your project for you. You need to come up with ideas and then ask us specific questions about how to make that idea become a reality.

working model Tsunami

Post by Moorthy »

The model which I am looking for is my school project. The size of the model can be 3'*5'(w*l). the wave size can be very small that i can get within this size.

What my plans were
making a plastic tub with that size, and extending the bottom beyond the boundary of the tub. there using a mechanical hammer strike the extended bottom and that should create a small vibration inside the tub and using a motor simlulate the wave( movement of water) and for the foam effect add certain foam generating chemical in the water. As the wave will come over the boundary of the tub there will be extended place infront of the tub and as the waves move high it spills over the boundary and pulls down the small light weight objects . bring back the water in to the tank and recycle that ...

I don't know whether i am right in my direction

I need to submit my projet by 6th of July 2005.
The money that i can spend will be (US$50) this is what i have . However I have lots of electrical items like motors, coils, and other stuff

if the budget needs to be slightly increased thes I can ask my dad's assiatance

are the informations sufficient
looking forward o ur assistance :?

This is excellent. You are on the right track. Your plan should work very well. I only have one concern. That is that the hammer may not generate the type of wave you are looking for. A tsunami is generated when an earthquake displaces a lot of water. The hammer is not going to displace very much water. However, if you were to rig a board to a weight so that you could sink it and then pull it up quickly, you might be able to displace enough water. If this doesn't work, you could try something else, such as a sealed tupperware. The other issue is that tsunami waves do not grow to large sizes until they encounter resistance. Think of the waves in the ocean; they only get big when they get near the coast. So, you will also need to include a slanted slope in your model in order to get the best results. Other than that, your ideas look great!

Let me know if I can be of any more help!
All the best,
Terik
