WasteWater Treatment & Antifoaming

Post by Darshan »

Hi.. I am in big trouble..

I have got a project in school involving "WasteWater Treatment"..
I have being doing my homework on this from the past one month..

I have done some research through google.. but i couldnt understand some papers.. & most of the papers had only abstracts..
Can you tell me where i can get the full papers..?? I will take my teacher's help to understand them..
Or if you give me some papers related to this, it will be of great help to me..

Please help..

I went through the project ideas & most parts of SCIENCEBUDDIES.. i found this wesite to be very impressive..
Wish i was given an opportunity in school to select one of the topics in PROJECT IDEAS, then i could have elaborated on one of the topics..
But due to last minute preparations, my teachers only gave me WASTEWATER TREATMENT project..
I will be going to an industry to work with my friends for this project..

Please suggest me the procedure or protocol on how to go about the project.. what papers to refer for this..???
Please reply as soon as possible..
Thank you..

Hi,

Welcome to science buddies! This is a very interesting project and involves lots of physics and chemistry. The problem you are having with accessing journals articles is that many of them are available only through subscription. Some older articles are available for free. I am not familiar with this field of literature, so if you will send me the links, I’ll see if I can access some of them for you. You should also check with your local university to see if the library has these journals, and if you can visit to look up the journal articles. You are very wise to do as much background reading as possible on your topic before you start your experiment. It’s very important to understand the scientific principles that are related to your topic.

This subject is not my area of expertise, but I’ll try to help with the chemistry and try to understand what you are trying to do.

First, here is a website that offers antifoaming products for sale. It looks like they are all based on silicone. You might want to contact some companies like this and get literature to find out what types of problems they are trying to solve and get more information about the chemical composition of the antifoaming agents.

http://www.chemcoproducts.net/SiliconeDefoamers.htm

Here is a website that explains what foam is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foam

Here is a website that you should be able to access, which is an example of a research paper on foaming. This article should give you an idea of experimental techniques you can use to study foam.

http://74.125.155.132/search?q=cache:Gg ... clnk&gl=us

Here is the Wikipedia website, which includes information you need on surface tension, including several ways to measure surface tension with references. You will need to measure something to quantititate the effect of your independent variable in your project, so you will probably need to learn how to measure surface tension.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface_tension

Now for your topic. Your objective appears to be concerned with the entire process of solving the foaming problem at the treatment plant, and this project would be too vast and complicated for a science project. With a science project, you want to ask a question that can be answered with a well controlled experiment. You would not try to solve the whole problem of antifoaming, but just look at one small part of the problem. You could, for example, study the source of the foaming agents that are entering the treatment plant. You could do a study to optimize the timing and quantity of antifoaming agents added to the water. You could compare the effectiveness of different types of antifoaming agents. I’m sure that you can think of other ideas since you have been studying this subject.

I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you Donna mam..

You are right about SUBSCRIPTION for obtaining full papers.. I will follow your advice on this..
These info & links are great.. I will talk to my teachers about the alteration in my OBJECTIVE..
I will definately get back to you when i am clear with what i want..

I have had a glimpse of some pdf files obtained from google. But all these dint give me protocols.. They explained the theory part of it..
I have glanced through e-books like -

1.Chemistry of naturalWater and industrial waste water-Industrial Water Treatment
2.Domestic Wastewater Treatment In Pilot Scale Constructed Wetlands Implemented In The Middle East Tec
3.BMS Devens waste water pretreatment.pdf
4.EVALUATING BIOSTIMULANT EFFECTS IN SWINE PRODUCTION FACILITYWASTEWATER.pdf
5.Fantomat.pdf
6.Federal Wage System Job Grading Standard for Wastewater Treatment.pdf
7.Foam and Environment.pdf
8.Foam-Products-and-the-Environment.pdf
9.Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plants.pdf
10.Integrated Approach to waste water treatment.pdf

But these are too much for me to understand.. Nothing gives me proper protocols on treatment of waste water..
If you have general procedure for wastewater treatment, please help mam...
Please give me information on the protocols when you can..

Thank you for your time & help for your new student...

Hi Darshan,

This reference I have attached in 4 parts reports results of a survey designed to determine the source of foam in a river on the border of Austria and Hungary. The authors do include the details of a protocol to determine the “foam index” of a sample. The article is interesting because they also tested surface tension, oxygen, sodium chloride, and other chemical parameters, but they did not include the methods used for these tests. This is unusual, because in a scientific paper, you are always supposed to report test methods so someone else can reproduce the method. Your project should follow the basic format of a scientific reference; the problem is stated and then the details of how the problem is solved are presented. The science buddies website gives an excellent guide for developing a project.

https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... ndex.shtml

Here is a procedure for testing an antifoaming agent:

http://www.tramfloc.com/defoamer_testproced.pdf

Next you should clearly define your objective to a specific problem. Are you going to evaluate different defoamers for a specific wastewater plant? Are you going to optimize the method for adding defoamers to the waster stream? Are you going to determine the source of the foaming agents? Are you going to try to develop an improved antifoaming agent? Each of these problems is different and would require a different experimental approach.

Thanks a million tons mam..
You are the best teacher that i ever had..
I am on top of the moon because my job is reduced to a lot of extent..

I had being to SCIENCEDIRECT website while searching for wastewater treatment papers. But couldnot download any papers as all asked for subscription..
Thank you mam for all the information in the four parts.. i will read them now..

I will go through & work on this & get back to you when in doubt..
Kiran is right.. SCIENCEBUDDIES truly rocks & so does DONNAHARDY.. :D

Hi Darshan,

Thanks for your kind reply. We are always happy to help with science projects and you do have a very interesting and challenging topic.

I can help with the sciencedirect references, but not with any of the books you had found. If you are working with a local wastewater treatment facility, perhaps you could ask someone in the laboratory if there are any books available.

Here are some other websites with general background information; these are not scientific papers, but the information appears to be accurate and easy to understand.
