Dear Science Buddies,
I am looking for an idea to start my science fair project before school starts. This is my fourth year competing in the science fair, and second year in the High School Division. I was wondering if you have any ideas about a project pertaining to antiboitics in waste water, or a project dealing with decreasing the amount of antibotics in waste water. These two ideas are branches off what i did last year. I have placed every other year, but need help finding a place to start this year. Do you have any ideas?
Thank You

- Project Question: I am interested in doing a project on watershed symbiotic relationships. I will be using a near by creek. I need to narrow my topic. I will have the necessary testing kits available to me: turbidity, pH, etc. There is a wastewater treatment plant close by, and I would like to see if there are differences in the watersheds andsymbiotic relationships.
- Project Due Date: Due date is approx. Oct. 15, 2009.
- Project Status: I am just starting

Re: Environmental Sciences/WWTP Effluent
Hi Kimmel,
This is an excellent topic for investigation, and summer is a good time to get started again. I think the best way to pick a topic is to do a literature search to see what problems are currently being investigated. You want to know everything that has been done in the past so you can identify the next problem that needs to be solved. I would be interested in know what you did in the past. Also, do you have access to a laboratory?
Here are some current events articles:
1. Here is a news article reporting the ability of plants to absorb antibiotics from soil fertilized with manure from animals on antibiotics:
http://www.environmentalhealthnews.org/ ... s-in-crops
2. Here is an article that reports an improved method for measure antibiotics in wastewater:
http://pubs.rsc.org/en/Content/ArticleL ... eta%20site
3. Here’s an abstract on a project designed to test the degradation of antibiotics by activated sludge.
http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/es050006u
Do any of these articles give you an idea to investigate further? Please let me know what you think.

Re: Environmental Sciences/WWTP Effluent
Dear Ms. Hardy
Thank you very much for the websites. They look like interesting ideas, and I will read and look into them tommorow. I do have access to a small lab at my school, but my teacher said it is possible to take samples into a univerisity lab. Last year i did a project entitled, "The Effects of Dissolved Oxygen, pH, and Temperature on Macroinvertebrates." I tested water above and below the WWTP to see the effects the effluent has on the environment. I will read over the articles tommorow, and get back to you tommorow also. Thank you so much for the sites!
Thanks,
Kimmel
