Hello and welcome to the forum!

I found the experiment you are doing (I think - is it this one? https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p074.shtml)

Are you getting a spark? Check out the apparatus in the dark to make sure. Also, does the spray you're testing have a flammable component? Please post more information about what you're doing so we can help.

Thanks.

The spark is small but definately works fine each time we try, the chemicals I am using all are flammable and contain denatured alcohol, and my father, a former science teacher, is stumped onto why the explosion is not happening. We are wondering if you have some specific examples of products to use (we could not find binaca). We are also wondering about how you exactly put the spray in the canister, because no matter how fast you are much of it should escape when you spray into it and then snap it on to its cap. Is there something we are missing here? One other thing--when we look at the pictures, the spark mechanism has the two metal point far apart. the one we bought has the two very close together, almost touching--but we still see a spark.
