Re: Idea on a project
Hi,
You don’t have much time, but the inhibition of mitosis in onion root tips by caffeine in strong coffee or tea might be doable if you have ready access to the chemicals and equipment needed. Here are a few resources related to the idea:
Here is a site with some background on the effect of caffeine on onion root tip mitosis:
http://www.protocol-online.org/cgi-bin/ ... cgi?ID=160
At the bottom of this page is a link to a Cell Biology Laboratory manual, which if explored (Lab Protocols - Histochemistry)has a protocol for the Feulgen stain proceedure which might be helpful.
Here is an experimental procedure for the caffeine inhibition of mitosis experiment, with instructions for the preparations of onion roots for observation:
http://www.huntington.org/uploadedFiles ... itosis.pdf
Good luck and let us know how it turns out!
Best regards,
Barrett L Tomlinson
