Fire Extinguishers

Post by deleted-68156 »

Is it possible to extinguish fire with soundwaves and if so what kind of experiments can one make. The one i have in mind requires an instrument to measure frequency and an oscilloscope i can not access :( right now :(By the end of this week i need to have done my experiment and the only thing stopping me is that

Emotality - There seems to be a lot of references to sound waves extinguishing flames starting with a hypothesis by Irish scientist John Tyndall who wrote of the phenomena in 1857. Many other references follow and you can search through them on the internet. What seems to be most common is reference to very high amplitude, low frequency waves (below 50 Hz). An attached link shows a setup used to demonstrate this in a high school or college experiment. Do some more research. It would seem that several other pieces of equipment will be necessary including a variable frequency audio generator, a reasonable power amplifier, and speakers or transducers that can operate at these frequencies and power levels to produce your experiment. An oscilloscope might be useful in measuring frequency and power levels, but does not appear to be the key to the experiments that I saw in these references. Perhaps you are reading other information. Some equipment might be available at your school. Good luck.

Thanks alot Rick for your tremendous help. :D .However,i have enquiries on the Test tone generator.I have googled it and found a software which i can install on my computer.Am i on the right track?Instead of using a bunsen burner i have decided to make an A-fire and put the spekers on both sides. Will this work out?I am planning on using my sisters room-on the floor-to do my experiment.I will ofcourse follow safety measures.please reply ASAP
